When Truth Becomes Uncomfortable

Scripture

“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching.”
—2 Timothy 4:3

Devotional
Paul does not say that people will be unable to understand sound teaching. He says they will not endure it.
That distinction matters. The problem is not always intellectual confusion. Often, the problem is spiritual resistance. God’s truth confronts our sin, humbles our pride, and challenges our desire to govern our own lives. It tells us that God is holy, that we are guilty, that our works cannot save us, and that Christ alone is sufficient.
By nature, we do not welcome that message. Sin has affected not only our behavior but also our minds, wills, affections, and desires. We are tempted to accept the parts of Scripture that comfort us while avoiding the parts that correct us.
Even Christians must remain alert to this tendency. Though we have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and given a genuine love for the truth, indwelling sin remains. We may still resist a command because it interferes with our plans. We may dislike a doctrine because it diminishes our sense of control. We may evaluate preaching by whether we enjoyed it rather than whether it faithfully explained God’s Word.
Sound doctrine is spiritually healthy doctrine. Like medicine, it may sometimes be unpleasant before it brings healing. God’s Word reproves, rebukes, and exhorts because God loves his people too much to leave us unchanged.
The humble believer does not merely ask, “Did that encourage me?” He also asks, “What does God want to correct in me?”

Reflection
What biblical truth are you most tempted to resist because it challenges your desires, pride, or sense of control?

Prayer

Holy God, forgive me for the ways I resist your Word. Give me ears that are willing to hear, a heart that is ready to submit, and faith that receives both your comfort and your correction. Use your truth to expose my sin and make me more like Christ. Amen.
