As For You
Scripture
“As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering.”
—2 Timothy 4:5
Devotional
The words “as for you” form a strong contrast.
Others may turn away from the truth. Others may chase teachers who satisfy their desires. Others may prefer comfort to faithfulness.
As for you, remain steady.
Timothy was not responsible to control the spiritual appetite of everyone around him. He was responsible to remain faithful to the calling God had given him.
Paul first tells him to be sober-minded. This means thinking clearly and remaining spiritually alert. Timothy must not be governed by praise, fear, anger, anxiety, discouragement, or the pressure to appear successful.
Faithful ministry requires a settled mind because opposition can easily distort our judgment. Criticism can make us defensive. Rejection can make us compromise. Discouragement can make us abandon work that God has actually called us to continue.
Paul also tells Timothy to endure suffering. Faithfulness may bring misunderstanding, loneliness, criticism, sacrifice, and an apparent lack of results. Endurance means staying at the post when obedience becomes difficult.
Jesus is our supreme example. He spoke truth when crowds followed him and when crowds abandoned him. He did not alter his message to preserve an audience. He endured rejection, shame, and the cross to redeem people who were hostile toward him.
Our endurance is not self-generated determination. We endure because Christ first endured for us, and because his Spirit strengthens us to continue.
Reflection
What pressure is currently tempting you to become discouraged, distracted, or unfaithful?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you remained faithful through rejection, suffering, and the cross. Keep me sober-minded and steady. Do not let fear, praise, disappointment, or hardship move me away from the work you have given me. Strengthen me to remain at my post. Amen.
