Grace for the Last Mile

Scripture:
“Grace be with you.”
2 Timothy 4:22

Devotional:
The final word of Paul’s final letter is grace.

That is not accidental. Paul spent his life preaching salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. And now, as he nears the end of his race, he does not close with human achievement, personal strength, or religious performance. He closes with grace.

Grace is not a small word. It is not a vague religious feeling. It is the blood-bought favor of God purchased by Christ, secured by His death, vindicated by His resurrection, and applied by the Holy Spirit.

Grace saves sinners. Grace trains saints. Grace sustains sufferers. Grace strengthens pastors. Grace keeps churches. Grace carries weary pilgrims home.

Paul needed grace. Timothy needed grace. The church needed grace. And so do we.
We need grace because we are not good enough and cannot make ourselves good enough. We need grace when we feel alone. We need grace when our bodies are weak.

 We need grace when obedience is costly. We need grace when ministry is hard. We need grace when winter is coming. We need grace when death is near.

The Christian life begins with grace, continues by grace, and ends with grace. Jesus is not only the Savior who brings us into the race; He is the Savior who brings us safely home.

If you are not in Christ, you do not merely need religious improvement. You need grace. You need the mercy of God in Jesus Christ. Christ died for sinners and rose again, and He saves all who come to Him by faith.

And if you are in Christ, you still need grace — grace for today, grace for tomorrow, and grace for the last mile.

Where are you most aware today that you need the grace of Christ?

Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your grace in Jesus Christ. I cannot save myself, sustain myself, or bring myself safely home. Keep me by Your grace. Strengthen me by Your grace. And when I reach the last mile, carry me home by Your grace. Amen.
