Pursued All the Way Home

Scripture: Psalm 23:5–6; John 10:27–29; Revelation 7:17

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” — Psalm 23:6

Psalm 23 begins in a pasture, passes through a valley, pauses at a table, and ends at home.
At the table, the imagery changes from shepherd to gracious host. David is welcomed, refreshed, and honored—even while his enemies remain nearby. God does not need to remove every enemy before blessing His people. He can provide fellowship and an overflowing cup in the middle of hardship.

The word translated “mercy” is hesed, referring to God’s steadfast covenant love. Unlike our wavering love, His love does not depend upon our ability to keep ourselves secure.
David says that goodness and mercy will “follow” him. The word can carry the stronger meaning of pursue. God’s goodness and covenant love are not merely trailing behind David. They are actively pursuing him.

This is the foundation of the believer’s perseverance. Christians continue in faith because God preserves them. Sheep wander, but the Good Shepherd never loses those who truly belong to Him. Jesus promises, “No one will snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28).
Our assurance does not rest upon the strength of our grip on Christ. It rests upon the strength of His grip on us.

The psalm ends with David dwelling in the Lord’s house forever. This is our great Christian hope. We presently enjoy fellowship with God while enemies remain, but we await the day when sin, Satan, suffering, and death will be destroyed forever.

Revelation 7:17 brings the imagery to its glorious conclusion: “The Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd.” The Lamb who died for His sheep is the Shepherd who brings them safely home.

Your enemies do not have the final word. Your Shepherd does. The salvation He began, He will complete.

Faithful Shepherd, thank You that Your covenant love never lets me go. Preserve me through every trial and keep me close to Christ. Fix my hope upon the Lamb who died, rose again, and now shepherds His people safely home. Amen.
