Poured Out in Worship
Scripture:
“For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.”
—2 Timothy 4:6
Devotional:
Paul knew his death was near. Yet he did not describe it with bitterness, fear, or despair. He said he was being “poured out as a drink offering.”
That is worship language. In the Old Testament sacrificial system, a drink offering was poured out before the Lord as part of worship and consecration. Paul saw his life—and even his approaching death—as an offering to God.
Rome may have thought it was silencing Paul. His enemies may have thought they were finally putting an end to his ministry. But Paul saw something deeper. His life belonged to Christ, and now the final drops were being poured out before the Lord.
This does not mean Paul’s death saved anyone. Only Christ’s sacrifice saves sinners. Jesus alone atones for sin. But Paul’s death was the final act of a life already given to Christ.
That challenges the way we view our own lives. We often think of worship as something we do for an hour on Sunday. But Scripture calls us to present our whole lives to God. Our work, our family life, our suffering, our service, our weakness, our aging, and even our dying belong to Him.
The question is not merely, “How do I want to live?” The better question is, “Is my life being poured out before the Lord?”
A life given to Christ is never wasted. What the world may overlook, heaven receives as worship.
Reflection Question:
What part of your life do you need to consciously offer to the Lord as worship today?
Prayer:
Father, my life belongs to You. Teach me to see my time, strength, service, suffering, and even weakness as things to be offered back to You in worship. Amen.
