Daily Bread for Daily Dependence

Scripture
Luke 11:3–4

“Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins… And lead us not into temptation.”

Devotional
Jesus teaches us to bring ordinary life before God.

Bread.

Sin.

Temptation.

These aren't abstract theological concepts. They are the realities of Tuesday morning.
“Give us each day our daily bread” teaches us to depend upon God for what we need today.
Food.
Work.
Health.
Strength.
Wisdom.
Transportation.
School.
Energy.
A difficult conversation.
Whatever today's necessities might be.

We easily develop the illusion of independence. A stocked refrigerator, paycheck, machinery, retirement account, or steady employment can subtly convince us that we provide for ourselves.

Prayer corrects that illusion.
Every meal is mercy.
Every breath is mercy.
Every provision is mercy.
But our greatest need is not merely physical.
Jesus immediately teaches us to pray:

“Forgive us our sins.”

The Christian does not need to be re-justified every morning. Everyone united to Christ has been fully and finally declared righteous because of Jesus.

Yet justified Christians still sin.

We still need confession.

We don't confess so God will accept us again. We confess because in Christ we already have a Father to whom we can return.
And then:

“Lead us not into temptation.”

We need protection because we are weaker than we think.

We should never pray, “Lord, protect me from temptation,” while deliberately walking toward the very temptation from which we are asking Him to deliver us.
Prayer and watchfulness belong together.

Jesus therefore teaches us to bring the whole day beneath God's care:
God's Provision.
God's Pardon.
God's Protection.
We need all three every day.

Reflection
Which are you most tempted to forget today: your dependence upon God's provision, your need for confession, or your need for spiritual protection?

Prayer
Father, give me what I need for today. Keep me from assuming that I am self-sufficient. Thank You that every good thing comes from Your hand. Forgive my sins—not because I deserve forgiveness, but because Christ has secured it for me. Protect me from temptation and help me walk in watchfulness and obedience. Keep me dependent upon You today. Amen.
