The Lord Is My Shepherd

Scripture: Psalm 23:1; John 10:11–14
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1

David had been a shepherd, but in Psalm 23 he takes the place of a sheep. Though he became Israel’s king, he never outgrew his need to be led, protected, restored, and kept by God.

Our culture admires the self-made person—the one who charts his own course and carries his own burdens. Psalm 23 destroys that illusion. Sheep do not provide for themselves, defend themselves, or find their own way home. They need a shepherd.

David does not merely say that the Lord is a shepherd. He says, “The LORD is my shepherd.” “LORD” is God’s covenant name, Yahweh. David’s confidence rests in the personal, covenant-keeping God who has bound Himself to His people.

The word “my” is equally important. David is not admiring the Shepherd from outside the flock. He belongs to Him.

Jesus identifies Himself as the fulfillment of this psalm: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). Our greatest problem is not a lack of direction or encouragement. It is our sin, which separates us from God. Jesus met that need by laying down His life in the place of His sheep.

The gospel is not that wandering sheep eventually discover the way home. The gospel is that the Good Shepherd comes looking for His sheep, dies to redeem them, and brings them into His flock.

The question is not simply whether you admire Psalm 23. The question is whether you belong to its Shepherd. Through repentance and faith, the believer can rest the full weight of life and eternity upon Christ and say, “The Lord is my Shepherd.”

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that I cannot save, lead, or keep myself. Thank You for laying down Your life for Your sheep. Help me to hear Your voice, follow Your leading, and rest the full weight of my life upon You. Amen.
