Who is Shaping You?
Read: Psalm 1:1
Psalm 1 begins by describing a person who refuses to be shaped by the world’s rebellion against God. The progression is striking: walking, standing, and finally sitting. What begins as listening to ungodly counsel gradually becomes participation and eventually belonging.
This does not mean Christians should avoid everyone who does not know Christ. Jesus welcomed sinners, ate with them, and showed them compassion. But He was never discipled by them. He entered their lives to bring them the truth; He did not allow their unbelief to reshape His convictions.
Every voice we regularly hear is doing something to us. Friends, entertainment, social media, podcasts, and news are all presenting a view of what matters and what a good life looks like. The question is not whether you are being influenced, but who is influencing you most.
The counsel of the world rarely announces itself as rebellion against God. It often sounds reasonable: “Do whatever makes you happy.” “You deserve this.” “Your feelings determine what is true.” If we hear such messages repeatedly without measuring them against Scripture, they can quietly begin to shape our hearts.
God has given us His Word so that His voice will be the loudest and most trusted voice in our lives. The blessed life begins by rejecting counsel that leads us away from God and receiving the wisdom that comes from Him.
Consider: What voices have been shaping your attitudes, priorities, and decisions lately? Is there one influence you need to limit so that you can hear God’s Word more clearly?
Prayer: Father, help me recognize the voices that are drawing my heart away from You. Give me wisdom to reject ungodly counsel and humility to receive Your truth. Let Your Word shape my thoughts, desires, and decisions today. Amen.
