The Slow Pull of the Present World

Scripture:
“For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica.” — 2 Timothy 4:10

Devotional:
Demas is one of the saddest names in Paul’s letters. He had once been counted among Paul’s fellow workers. He had been near faithful ministry, near faithful men, and near the work of the gospel. But now Paul says that Demas, “in love with this present world,” had deserted him.

The danger here is sobering. Demas did not simply change locations. He abandoned the mission. He loved this present world more than the appearing of Christ.
This is a warning to every professing believer. It is possible to be around faithful people, involved in ministry, known by the church, and still have your heart slowly captured by the world.

Most people do not drift from Christ all at once. The drift is usually slow. Comfort pulls. Fear pulls. Money pulls. Ease pulls. Pleasure pulls. Reputation pulls. Little by little, love for Christ’s appearing can be replaced by love for this present age.
Paul’s contrast is clear. The faithful Christian loves the appearing of Jesus. Demas loved the present world.

So we must ask ourselves honestly: What is competing with Christ for my love? What comfort, fear, pleasure, or desire would tempt me to step back from faithfulness?
The answer is not to trust our own strength. The answer is to keep our eyes on Christ, who is better than the world, better than ease, better than applause, and better than everything this age promises but cannot keep.

Reflection Question:
What part of “this present world” most often pulls at your heart and weakens your faithfulness to Christ?

Prayer:
Father, guard my heart from loving this present world more than Christ. Show me where I am drifting. Keep me from slow compromise and hidden worldliness. Help me love the appearing of Jesus and remain faithful to Him until the end. Amen.
