Keep Knocking

Luke 11:9–10

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

Some prayers are easy to pray once.

The difficult prayers are the ones we have prayed for years.
A child's salvation.
A wandering family member.
A painful marriage.
Healing that has not come.
A temptation that continues.
A burden that refuses to disappear.
A person you desperately want to see come to Christ.

Jesus tells us:
Ask.
Seek.
Knock.

The parable immediately before these words describes a man persistently asking his neighbor for bread. Jesus' point isn't that God resembles an irritated neighbor whom we must annoy until He finally gives in.

It is a contrast.

If even a reluctant neighbor eventually responds, how much more can God's children trust their gracious Father?

Persistence in prayer does not overcome God's unwillingness.
God is not unwilling.

Persistent prayer expresses our ongoing dependence upon His goodness.
This also helps us understand the relationship between God's sovereignty and our prayers.
If God is sovereign, why pray?

Because the sovereign God ordains both the ends and the means.

He ordains salvation—and He ordains gospel preaching and prayer.

He ordains provision—and He teaches His children to ask Him for bread.

Prayer does not make a reluctant God willing to act. Prayer is one of the means through which our sovereign God accomplishes His purposes.

So keep praying.

Not because enough persistence guarantees the outcome you want.

Not because you can manipulate God.

But because you trust His power, His wisdom, and His goodness.

His timing may not be yours.

His answer may not be the answer you imagined.

But silence is not abandonment.

Keep asking.
Keep seeking.
Keep knocking.

Reflection
What prayer have you been tempted to stop praying because God's answer has not yet come?

Prayer
Father, help me to keep asking, seeking, and knocking. Guard me from trying to manipulate You or demanding the outcome I want. Instead, help me trust Your power, wisdom, and goodness. You know what I cannot see. Your timing is perfect even when I don't understand it. Give me perseverance to continue bringing this burden before You. Amen.
