The Full Joy of Abiding

Scripture: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” — John 15:11

Jesus spoke about joy only hours before his crucifixion.

Confusion, persecution, grief, betrayal, and death stood immediately before him and his disciples. Yet Jesus promised that his joy would be in them and that their joy would be full.

Christian joy is not constant cheerfulness. It is not pretending that sorrow does not hurt.
 Christian joy is the settled delight of knowing Christ, being loved by Christ, and living for the Father’s glory—even during a season of trial and pruning.

Jesus does not present obedience and joy as opposites. The obedient life is the pathway to full joy because sin always promises more pleasure than it can provide and always delivers less. Sin takes us farther than we wanted to go, keeps us longer than we wanted to stay, and costs us more than we wanted to pay.

Christ offers something better: his own joy within us.

Jesus is not merely an example of a fruitful branch whom we should imitate. He is the true vine and the perfectly obedient Son. We were the fruitless and rebellious ones, but Jesus went to the cross and bore the judgment sinners deserved. He rose from the dead and now communicates his resurrection life to his people through the Holy Spirit.

We are not saved by producing enough fruit to attach ourselves to Christ. We are united to Christ by grace through faith. Because we have been united to him, his life begins to bear fruit in us.

The gospel does not say, “Make yourself fruitful enough so that Jesus will accept you.” The gospel says, “Come to Christ with empty hands. Receive his life, remain in his love, and trust him to produce what you could never manufacture.”

The Habits of Grace are not a Christian self-improvement program. Through these ordinary, God-appointed means, we abide in the extraordinary Savior who loved us and gave himself for us.

Reflection: Are you seeking joy apart from obedience and communion with Christ? What would it look like to come to Christ today with empty hands?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for bearing my judgment and giving me your resurrection life. Teach me to rest in your love, obey your commands, and receive your joy—even during sorrow and pruning. Produce lasting fruit in me for the glory of the Father. Amen.
