When Fear Arrives

Read: 1 Samuel 21:10–15; Psalm 56:1–4
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3

David had good reason to be afraid. He had fled from Saul, left his friend Jonathan, and entered Gath—the hometown of Goliath. Even more striking, David arrived carrying Goliath’s sword. The servants of Achish recognized him and remembered Israel’s victory song: “Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” David was standing in enemy territory, before a hostile king, with nowhere obvious to run.

First Samuel tells us that David was “much afraid.” Psalm 56 shows us what faith did with that fear. David did not begin by pretending to be composed. He began with his need: “Be gracious to me, O God.” Faith does not require us to deny danger or hide our trembling. It teaches us where to take it.

Fear is something like a warning light on a vehicle’s dashboard. A warning light deserves attention. It may alert us to a real problem. But it was never designed to steer the car. In the same way, fear may alert us to danger, weakness, or uncertainty, but it is a terrible driver. If fear takes the wheel, every decision will be governed by self-protection.

David gives us a better response: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” He does not say if he is afraid. He says when. Trust is not the absence of trembling; it is the deliberate act of placing our trembling lives into the hands of God.

We do not need to compose ourselves before we pray. We can name the diagnosis, the conflict, the financial pressure, the uncertainty about a child, or the fear of death. Lament is not unbelief when it carries our fear to God. The Lord invites us to tell him the truth and ask for grace.

Prayer
Gracious Father, you know the dangers I face and the fears I carry. Forgive me for pretending that I am stronger than I am and for allowing fear to direct my steps. When I am afraid, teach me to put my trust in you. Take the wheel of my life and lead me by your Word. Amen.
