When You Do Not Know What to Pray
Scripture: Psalm 57:1; Hebrews 4:14–16
“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge.”
—Psalm 57:1, ESV
There are times when we do not know what to say to God. We know that we are afraid, tired, or overwhelmed, but we cannot find the words to explain everything we feel. Perhaps we are waiting for an answer, carrying a burden for someone we love, or facing a situation we cannot fix.
David knew what it was to be in danger. Psalm 57 tells us that he had fled from Saul and taken shelter in a cave. Before David speaks of a steadfast heart or a song of praise, he begins with a simple, repeated plea: “Be merciful to me.”
David did not come to God as someone who had everything under control. He came as a needy man seeking help from the Lord. We can come in the same way.
Sometimes we imagine that our need makes us an inconvenience to God. We may think we should be stronger by now or that we should be able to handle our troubles without asking for help. But our need is not a reason to stay away from God. It is a reason to seek his mercy.
David describes taking refuge in the shadow of God’s wings. It is a picture of shelter and care. The image does not promise that every storm will quickly pass or that nothing painful will touch us. It tells us where to turn when the storm is real: we come to the God whose mercy is greater than our weakness.
Our greatest need for mercy goes deeper than our circumstances. We are sinners who need forgiveness before a holy God. Jesus, the promised Son of David, died for sinners and rose again. Through faith in him, we can draw near to God, not because we have earned a hearing, but because Christ has opened the way.
Hebrews 4 reminds us that Jesus is our great high priest. He knows our weakness, and he invites us to come to the throne of grace for mercy and help. Even when we cannot find many words, we can pray, “Lord, have mercy on me.”
Reflection question: What burden can you bring to God today, even if all you can find to say is, “Lord, have mercy”?
Prayer: Father, you know the needs I cannot fully explain. Thank you that I can come to you through Jesus, my Savior and great high priest. Have mercy on me, forgive my sin, and help me rest in your care. Amen.
