The Most High God Is Near
Scripture: Psalm 57:2–3; Romans 8:28–29
“I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.”
—Psalm 57:2, ESV
When we face an uncertain future, we often want to know how everything will work out. We would like to see the end of the story before we take the next step. But many of life’s hardest seasons do not come with a clear explanation or a timetable.
David’s future did not look much like the life he might have expected. He had been anointed as Israel’s future king, yet he was fleeing from Saul. In Psalm 57, David cries out to God Most High. The earthly king pursuing him seemed powerful, but David’s life was ultimately in the hands of the God who rules over every king.
The title “Most High” reminds us that no danger or difficulty is beyond God’s authority. Yet David also trusts that this great God is attentive to him. The One who rules over all things is not too distant to hear the cry of one frightened person.
David is confident that God will carry out his purpose. That does not mean David knows every step of the journey. It also does not mean that God has promised to arrange every detail according to David’s preferences. David’s confidence rests in the wisdom and faithfulness of the One who holds his future.
Romans 8:28–29 reminds believers that God works in all things for good and that his purpose includes making us more like his Son. This promise does not tell us that every event is good or that every loss will be restored in the way we expect during this life. It assures us that suffering cannot defeat God’s purpose for those who belong to Christ.
We see God’s wisdom and love most clearly in Jesus. Through the suffering, death, and resurrection of his Son, God accomplished the salvation we could never accomplish for ourselves. The cross reminds us that even when we cannot understand what God is doing, we can trust the God who gave his Son for us.
Trusting God’s providence does not mean sitting still when there is a wise step to take. We can pray, seek counsel, receive help, and make faithful decisions. As we do, we rest in the care of the Most High God, whose steadfast love and faithfulness do not fail.
Reflection question: What uncertainty are you trying to control, and what would it look like to entrust it to God while taking the next wise step?
Prayer: God Most High, my future is known to you even when it is hidden from me. Help me trust your wisdom, seek your help, and take the next faithful step. Thank you for showing your love in Jesus. Amen.
