Even the Names Matter

Scripture:
“Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.”
2 Timothy 4:19

Devotional:
It is easy to rush through the names at the end of Paul’s letters. Prisca, Aquila, Onesiphorus, Erastus, Trophimus, Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia — these names may seem unfamiliar to us. We may be tempted to treat them like closing credits at the end of a movie.

But these names matter because Scripture matters. Every word is breathed out by God. Even the greetings are profitable. Even the travel details teach us. Even the people we barely know by name were known and loved by the Lord.

Paul is nearing the end of his life, and his final words are not about possessions, reputation, or comfort. He speaks of people. He remembers gospel friends. He values faithful servants. He names brothers and sisters who have shared in the work of Christ.

That tells us something important about the Christian life. We are not meant to follow Jesus alone. The church is not merely an event we attend; it is a family to which we belong. God often sustains His people through His people.

Prisca and Aquila were ordinary believers who became deeply useful in gospel ministry. Onesiphorus refreshed Paul and was not ashamed of his chains. Their names remind us that hidden faithfulness is not forgotten by God.

You may feel ordinary. You may not think your service matters much. But the Lord sees every act of faithfulness done in His name. He sees the encouragement, the prayers, the hospitality, the visits, the quiet acts of love. History may forget many names, but Christ never does.

Who has God used to strengthen your faith, and whom might He be calling you to encourage this week?

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the people You have placed in my life to strengthen me in Christ. Help me not to treat the church casually, but as a family of grace. Make me faithful in ordinary ways, and use me to refresh others for Your glory. Amen.
