The Truly Blessed Man

Read: Psalm 1:3–6

Psalm 1 presents two people, two paths, and two destinies. The righteous are like a fruitful tree, while the wicked are like chaff blown away by the wind. One path is known and guarded by the Lord; the other ends in destruction.

If we read this psalm only as a list of qualities we must achieve, it can leave us discouraged. None of us has perfectly rejected sinful counsel. None of us has delighted continually in God’s Word. None of us has produced the fruit that God deserves.

But Psalm 1 ultimately points us to Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the truly blessed man. He never walked according to sinful counsel, stood in compromise, or sat among those who mocked His Father. He delighted perfectly in God’s will and remained obedient even to death. His life always produced the right fruit in the right season.

Through faith, we are united to Him. His righteousness is counted as ours, and His Spirit begins producing His character within us. We do not develop habits of grace to earn a place among the righteous. We pursue them because Christ has already made us His own.
That distinction matters. Scripture does not merely tell us to try harder to become a better tree. It directs us to Christ, our source of life. Grace creates delight, delight leads to obedience, and obedience produces fruit.

The Christian’s confidence is not that we have held on to God perfectly, but that the Lord knows His people. His knowledge is personal, covenantal, and loving. The path may include storms, suffering, and seasons of weakness, but it cannot end in destruction because Christ has secured our destination.

Consider: Are you treating spiritual habits as a way to earn God’s acceptance, or as a response to the acceptance you already have in Christ?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the perfectly righteous and blessed man. Thank You for giving me Your righteousness and making me Your own. Root my confidence in Your finished work, and use Your Word to produce genuine holiness and lasting fruit in me. Amen.
