Do the Work of an Evangelist
Scripture
“Do the work of an evangelist.”
—2 Timothy 4:5
Devotional
Timothy was called to guard sound doctrine and confront false teaching. Yet Paul did not want him to become so occupied with error that he forgot to proclaim the gospel.
“Do the work of an evangelist.”
The church must expose falsehood when necessary, but the final answer to false teaching is not merely denunciation. It is the clear proclamation of Jesus Christ.
The Bible is not primarily a collection of moral lessons or advice for improving our daily lives. From beginning to end, it reveals God’s redemptive plan centered in Christ. Jesus is the promised Savior, the obedient Son, the crucified substitute, the risen Lord, and the returning King.
Therefore, preaching the Word must ultimately point people to him.
The true evangelist declares that we are more sinful than we understand, God is more holy than we can imagine, Christ is more sufficient than we have believed, and grace is more abundant than all our sin.
The gospel does not flatter human passions. It calls us to repent. Yet it also offers something infinitely better than self-rule: forgiveness, reconciliation with God, a new heart, and eternal life in Christ.
We should never assume that people already understand the gospel. We must speak it clearly, repeatedly, and personally.
Christ died for sinners. Christ rose from the dead. Everyone who turns from sin and trusts in him will be saved.
That message remains the power of God for salvation.
Reflection
Who in your life needs to hear a clear and loving explanation of the gospel?
Prayer
God of grace, keep the gospel at the center of my life and speech. Give me courage to speak clearly about sin, repentance, Christ’s cross, and his resurrection. Help me not merely to oppose error, but to point people to the Savior who alone can give them life. Amen.
