Teachers Who Scratch the Itch

Scripture

“Having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”
—2 Timothy 4:3

Devotional
False teachers do not flourish in a vacuum. They prosper because there is a market for what they offer.
Paul says that people will gather teachers who suit their own passions. They will not necessarily abandon spiritual teaching altogether. Instead, they will search for teaching that gives religious approval to the life they already want to live.
They want affirmation without confrontation, blessing without repentance, Christ without lordship, spirituality without holiness, and heaven without the narrow way.
This temptation is especially strong in an age when we can choose from thousands of sermons, podcasts, videos, and social-media voices. Algorithms quickly learn what interests us and continue giving us similar content. Without realizing it, we can create a spiritual world shaped almost entirely around our preferences.
The danger is not merely that we might hear an obviously false teacher. The greater danger may be that we slowly become unwilling to listen to anyone who challenges us.
Sinful desire often precedes doctrinal compromise. A desire becomes dominant. Scripture challenges it. We then face a choice: submit the desire to God’s Word or find an interpretation that allows us to keep it.
Falsehood can feel like freedom because it removes the discomfort of repentance. But when people turn away from truth, they do not stop believing. They begin believing lies.
The faithful question is not, “Does this teaching validate me?” but, “Is this what God has said?”

Reflection
Do the teachers you regularly listen to help you submit to Scripture, or do they mainly reinforce what you already prefer to believe?

Prayer
Father, protect me from seeking voices that merely confirm my desires. Give me discernment to test every teaching by your Word. Make me willing to receive truth even when it confronts me, and guard me from exchanging your authority for comfortable lies. Amen.
