The Lord Stood By Me
Scripture:
“But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me.” — 2 Timothy 4:17
Devotional:
At Paul’s first defense, no one came to stand by him. Everyone deserted him. That must have been deeply painful.
Yet Paul’s testimony was not, “Everyone treated me well.” It was not, “Ministry was easy.” It was not, “I was never hurt.” It was not, “I was strong enough.”
His testimony was this: “The Lord stood by me and strengthened me.”
When everyone else left, Christ did not.
This is the great comfort of the passage. Paul was not ultimately alone in that courtroom.
His visible supporters were absent, but Christ was present. The Lord stood with him, strengthened him, and gave him opportunity to proclaim the message.
This hope is rooted in the gospel. Jesus Christ was truly forsaken so that His people would never be finally forsaken. He bore the wrath and judgment our sins deserved so that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Him.
Because Christ was abandoned under judgment, the believer will never be abandoned in condemnation.
Paul knew he might die. But he also knew he would not be lost. The Lord would rescue him from every evil deed and bring him safely into His heavenly kingdom.
That is Christian endurance. It is not pretending things are easy. It is knowing that Jesus is worthy, present, victorious, and faithful to bring His people home.
Reflection Question:
How does the truth that “the Lord stood by me” strengthen you in your present loneliness, weakness, or hardship?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that You stand with Your people. When others fail, You remain faithful. When I am weak, You strengthen me. When I feel alone, You are near. Hold me fast, use me as a witness, and bring me safely into Your heavenly kingdom. To You be glory forever and ever. Amen.
