Loving His Appearing

Scripture:
“Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness...and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
—2 Timothy 4:8

Devotional:
Paul’s hope was not ultimately behind him. It was ahead of him. He looked forward to the crown of righteousness that the Lord, the righteous Judge, would award on that day.
Paul was about to face the verdict of Rome, but Rome’s verdict was not final. Caesar might condemn him, but Christ would vindicate him. The earthly court might sentence him to death, but the righteous Judge had already secured his future.

This crown was not merely for Paul. It was not only for apostles, missionaries, martyrs, or unusually strong Christians. Paul says it is for “all who have loved his appearing.”
That means this promise belongs to every true believer. Even the weak believer who sincerely trusts Christ and longs for His coming shares in this hope.

To love Christ’s appearing is to love Christ Himself. It is to desire to see Him face to face, to be free from sin, to see justice established, to enjoy unhindered fellowship with God, and to behold the Savior by sight.

This exposes our hearts. For those who love the present world, Christ’s return feels like a threat. For those who love Christ, His return is blessed hope.

The highest Christian hope is not merely heaven. It is not merely reunion with loved ones. It is not merely rest or the end of suffering. Those are precious gifts, but they are not supreme. The highest Christian hope is Christ Himself.

One day our race will be over. Our opportunities to serve Christ in this life will be complete. On that day, the questions that matter most will be simple and searching: Did I belong to Christ? Did I keep the faith? Did I love His appearing?

Reflection Question:
Do you merely believe that Jesus will return, or do you love and long for His appearing?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, fix my hope on You. Teach me to love Your appearing and to live faithfully today because a greater Day is coming. Amen.
