From Duty to Delight

Read: Psalm 1:2

The blessed person does not merely avoid the wrong path. He has discovered something better: “his delight is in the law of the Lord.”

For many Christians, Bible reading can feel more like a duty than a delight. We know we should read Scripture, so we add it to our schedule and feel guilty when we miss it.

 Discipline is important, but checking a box is not the ultimate goal. We open the Bible because we want to know and enjoy the God who speaks through it.

Delight does not always come immediately. There will be mornings when we feel eager to read and others when we do not. Spiritual discipline means opening the Word even when our feelings lag behind. Often, delight grows through faithful practice. We begin from duty, but as we encounter God’s character, promises, and grace, duty increasingly becomes desire.

We must also remember that Bible reading does not earn God’s acceptance. We do not read so that God will love us more. In Christ, believers are already fully loved and accepted. We come to Scripture as children listening to the voice of their Father.

God’s Word shows us our sin, but it also leads us to our Savior. It corrects us, comforts us, and reminds us of promises we easily forget. The ultimate purpose of Bible reading is not merely information. It is communion with the living God.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I have neglected Your Word or treated it as merely another task. Give me a growing hunger for Your truth. Help me see Christ in Scripture and teach me to delight in hearing Your voice. Amen.
