Death is Departure

Scripture:
“My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.”
—Philippians 1:23

Devotional:
Paul describes his approaching death as a “departure.” That word gives us a picture. It can bring to mind a ship leaving the harbor, a soldier taking down his tent, a prisoner being released, or an animal being unyoked after completing its labor.

For the Christian, death is not annihilation. It is not the end of existence. It is departure from one place to another. It is leaving this present life and entering the presence of Christ.
That does not mean death is easy. The Bible calls death an enemy. It is grievous. It brings sorrow. It reminds us that sin has brought brokenness into God’s good world. Christians do not need to pretend death is harmless.

But death is not ultimate defeat for those who belong to Jesus. Christ has conquered death through His own death and resurrection. Because He lives, those who trust in Him will live also.

This changes the question. The most important question is not, “When will I die?” The greater question is, “Whose am I when I die?”

If you belong to Christ, your future is secure. Your confidence is not that you have lived a good enough life. Your confidence is that Jesus died and rose again for you.

The believer can face death differently—not because we are naturally brave, but because our Savior has gone through death and come out victorious on the other side.

Reflection Question:
How does belonging to Christ change the way you think about death, aging, and eternity?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that death is not the end for those who belong to You. Give me confidence in Your resurrection and help me live today in light of eternity. Amen.
