Useful Again

Scripture:
“Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.” — 2 Timothy 4:11

Devotional:
Mark’s name in this passage is full of grace.

Earlier in ministry, Mark had withdrawn from Paul and Barnabas during a missionary journey. Later, when Barnabas wanted to bring Mark again, Paul disagreed so strongly that he and Barnabas separated. Mark had failed in a way that affected ministry relationships.

But now, near the end of Paul’s life, Paul says, “Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.”

What a beautiful testimony to gospel restoration.

Paul did not pretend failure was harmless. He had once judged Mark unready for the work. But Paul also did not treat failure as final. By the grace of God, Mark was useful again.

That is good news for every failed servant of Christ. And in one way or another, that is all of us. We have all had seasons where we were not as faithful, courageous, humble, or useful as we should have been.

The church must take sin seriously, but it must also take restoration seriously. We should not be naive about failure, but neither should we write people off as though God cannot restore them.

The gospel that saved Paul could restore Mark. The gospel that restored Mark can restore us too.

In Christ, a bad chapter does not have to be the whole story. Grace can make failed servants useful again.

Reflection Question:
Is there someone, including yourself, whom you have been tempted to define mainly by past failure rather than by God’s restoring grace?

Prayer:
Lord, thank You that failure does not have to be final. Thank You for restoring fallen servants and making weak people useful again. Help me take sin seriously, but help me also believe deeply in Your grace. Make me useful for Your kingdom. Amen.
