The Lord be with Your Spirit

Scripture:
“The Lord be with your spirit.”
2 Timothy 4:22

Devotional:
Paul does not end his letter by saying, “Timothy, be strong enough.” He does not say, “You can do this.” He does not place Timothy’s hope in Timothy’s courage, discipline, personality, or gifting.

He says, “The Lord be with your spirit.”

Timothy’s deepest need was not merely advice. He needed Christ. He needed the presence of the Lord in the inner man — in his fears, discouragements, preaching, leadership, tears, and endurance.

That is our deepest need too.

We often think we need better circumstances first. We want the pressure removed, the weakness healed, the conflict resolved, the sorrow lifted, or the future clarified. Those may be good things to desire, and we may rightly ask God for them. But our greatest need is not first that everything around us would change. Our greatest need is that the Lord would be with us.

The presence of Christ does not mean the Christian life will be easy. Paul was still in prison. Timothy still had ministry burdens. Trophimus was still sick. Winter was still coming. But Christ was enough for all of it.

The Lord does not merely send help from a distance. He gives Himself. He is with His people by His Spirit. He strengthens weary hearts. He upholds trembling servants. He sustains pastors, churches, families, and suffering saints.

When you feel weak, you need the Lord with your spirit. When obedience is hard, you need the Lord with your spirit. When ministry is costly, you need the Lord with your spirit. When winter is coming, you need the Lord with your spirit.

And in Christ, He is.

Where do you most need to remember that Christ Himself is with you?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, be with my spirit. Strengthen me inwardly where I am weak, fearful, discouraged, or weary. Help me not to rely on myself, but on Your presence and power. Thank You that You are enough for every season. Amen.
