This I Know: God is For Me

Read: Psalm 56:8–11; Romans 8:31–39
“This I know, that God is for me.” — Psalm 56:9

David did not say, “This I feel.” Nothing about Gath felt safe. Enemies surrounded him, his future was uncertain, and fear kept returning. Yet he could say, “This I know, that God is for me.” His assurance rested not in the appearance of his circumstances but in the revealed character and covenant faithfulness of God.

The words “God is for me” can easily be misunderstood. They do not mean that God must bless every plan we make or spare us from every hardship. David’s life certainly did not unfold that way. God’s favor meant that he was committed to his gracious purpose and would preserve his servant according to his promise.

For the Christian, the deepest proof that God is for us is not that our lives are easy. It is that the Father gave his Son for us. Paul asks, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” He then points to the cross: “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all.” God’s favor toward his people is grounded in the finished work of Christ.

No accusation can condemn those whom God has justified in Christ. No suffering can remove them from his care. No power, no enemy, and not even death can separate them from his love. Our assurance rests outside of us—in Christ crucified, risen, reigning, and interceding for his people.

Psalm 56 repeats the confession of trust because fear seldom stays settled after one prayer. We may bring the same fear to God again tomorrow. Mature faith does not outgrow familiar promises. It returns to them. It teaches the heart again: God has spoken. Christ has finished the work. The Spirit has united me to the Son. Therefore, even with a trembling heart, I can take the next faithful step.

When your feelings are unsteady, answer them with what you know. God has not promised that nothing painful will happen. He has promised that nothing can separate his people from Christ.

1. Are you interpreting God’s love through your circumstances, or your circumstances through the cross of Christ?
2. What truth from Psalm 56 or Romans 8 do you need to repeat until it becomes the settled answer of faith?

Prayer
Father, when my feelings are uncertain, anchor me in what you have revealed. Thank you for giving your Son for me and for joining me to Christ by faith. Help me remember that no accusation, suffering, enemy, or death can separate me from your love. This I know: in Christ, you are for me. Amen.
